“Why are there coins in weird places?”
When my husband asked me that, I had coins by the bathroom sink, on the CPU of our desktop computer, on the shelf above our kitchen sink, by my nightstand, on top of the washer, taped to the back of my phone, next to the tv, and even in my shoe.
So it was a valid question.
One of the cool things about having a career that centers on learning and change is that you can apply a thing or two (or a thousand) to your own life.
In this case, I was using visual cues in my environment to develop a new habit.
You see, I had a bad habit of scarcity thinking when it came to money, which was contributing to my already high anxiety.
So, I wanted to replace my thoughts of scarcity with something more abundant and positive.
I chose to replace it with the thought, “Money is everywhere.”
Notice that I didn’t choose something like “I am the richest woman in the world,” or “I have millions of dollars in my bank account.” I didn’t choose thoughts like that because they simply didn’t feel true, and I knew the quickest way to change my thoughts was to replace it with a better thought that felt true.
But if you’ve ever tried to replace a thought habit, you know it’s one of the hardest habits to change because so many of our thoughts are automatic, and we don’t always know when or where a problematic thought will strike.
Enter my visual cues.
I placed these coins where I would see them throughout the day and in places likely to trigger my scarcity thinking. Then, when I saw them, it was my cue to think, “Money is everywhere,” and because I was seeing money seemingly everywhere, it really did feel like money was everywhere.
And you know what… it worked!
Not only did it work, it worked quickly. I struggled with scarcity thinking for years, maybe even decades. In just a few short weeks, I had noticeably fewer thoughts of scarcity and was thinking much more abundantly. What’s more, these abundant thoughts felt natural, not forced.
What makes this even more exciting is that when my thoughts changed, so did my behaviors.
And when my behavior changed, so did my outer world.
I was acting like a more abundant person, especially in my business.
With my old scarcity thinking, I was always anxious when I had to spend more than like $10 on my business, but as I thought more abundantly, I could more clearly see the benefits of investing in my business without the drama and anxiety I had before my thoughts changed.
It was pretty amazing, to be honest.
This is just one example of the strategies I put into place throughout the courses I create for my clients because that’s what the course should be all about, right? How we take the learner from their current situation and help them implement real changes in their life.
